Going Loco

Ben was looking to recruit a bunch of people for Ibiza Loco, a community of workers, residents, travellers and visitors to the fair isle. The roles included ticket sales reps, a presenter for a TV station, writers, dancers and performers.

He got the power

Rather than advertise the roles on jobs boards Ben decided to use the power of social media and referrals to fill the vacancies. He signed up for Zartis and had a custom careers site built and hosted in less than ten minutes. The site publishes his vacancies and allows candidates apply online. More information about the ever-popular entertainment group is also on display including Ben’s Twitter account, a Google map of their location and an About Us section.

What was great about the applicants coming from Facebook is that many were already part of our community.

Facebook

Ben promoted the roles through his Twitter account and Facebook page directing applicants to his custom careers site on Zartis. He was then able to review applicant details and start selecting the best. Every applicant received a personalized thank you email from the system after applying.

Within ten days he achieved fantastic results, despite not spending anything on job board or recruitment agency fees. Almost 3,500 people viewed the job ads and 317 people applied for roles. Of the 3,500 job views 2,461 of them came directly from Facebook. Over 20% of these were from people using Facebook on their mobile. At least three times what most would expect. Good news for Ben is that the Facebook views converted into real job applicants. 209 people applied directly from Facebook.

This is people seeing the jobs posted on a Facebook page and clicking through to Zartis.com to apply. “What was great about the applicants coming from Facebook is that many were already part of our community,” says Ben. “We’d prefer to work with people who already engage with us as they’re more likely to work out in the long term. This makes Facebook the ideal place to advertise our jobs.”

Mobile friendly

Mobile applicants were also far higher than industry averages. 30 people applied directly from their mobile phones. “The fact that we could display our vacancies in a non traditional manner made applying more appealing to people.”

Two things account for the high percentage of mobile applicants. Firstly, all jobs published on Zartis are mobile-friendly, allowing candidates to apply from their mobile by sending a limited amount of information and then following up later to complete the process. Also, a lot of people applying for roles were most likely on holiday in Ibiza when they saw the roles.

My total spend on recruitment is less than US$30 per month. Will social media play a role in recruitment? I think the stats speak for themselves on that one.

Referral by friends is also a worthy point to note from this example. 36 people viewed a job on Hotmail. Of these 36 people, 15 people proceeded to apply for a job. This is a conversion rate that is only set to get bigger as referral recruiting becomes more of a dominant player in the hiring process.
