Q: So, you’ve identified that things need to change. How do you actually put it into practice then? How do you make it happen?
“Measure everything. There are a number of answers to this. The first is that you have to get both the people in the trenches and those in the executive room on board with the same change; though it may look very different to each group. What I mean is that when I go into the boardroom, the way I talk about it is quite different from the way I speak to engineers, even though I’m telling the same story. I need to communicate in a way that’s relevant to each audience. I have to help my CEO understand why they hired me to fix a productivity problem, and why I’m here talking about culture, values, and ways of working — instead of just hurrying up and rewriting the code so we can ship features faster. And then it’s all about consistency.”
